CEO Students Visit Scanlon Excavating & Construction
The Kankakee County CEO class visited Scanlon Excavating & Concrete, Inc., where Beth Scanlon and her team provided an inside look at running a major excavation business. Scanlon, who also serves as a board member for Kankakee County CEO, shared insights about the bidding process, overhead costs, reviewing blueprints, and the day-to-day challenges of operating in this industry.
In addition to discussing excavation projects, Scanlon shared insights into her family’s other ventures: from farming to food trucks. To encourage the CEO students, she gifted each student a copy of The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy, emphasizing how small, consistent actions can lead to meaningful, long-term results.
Scanlon Excavating & Construction brings decades of experience to the region, having completed over 1,500 projects across Kankakee and the greater Chicagoland area, ranging from commercial work to large-scale IDOT projects. Their mission is to “Provide quality excavating and concrete services that are both safe and efficient by empowering our employees with the training, equipment, and resources needed to exceed our customer’s expectations.” That mission was evident to students throughout the visit, as they saw firsthand the company’s commitment to quality work and to its people.
The firm is also certified as a Women’s Business Enterprise (WBE) through the Illinois Capital Development Board and Central Management Systems and as a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) with IDOT. These certifications not only strengthen their role in state and federal contracts but also support diversity and inclusion by helping general contractors meet requirements for minority and women-owned subcontracting.
We are thankful to Beth for sharing her time and wisdom with the CEO team!
