Building Business Knowledge at Scanlon Excavating

Kankakee County CEO students recently went behind the scenes at Scanlon Excavating & Concrete, Inc. with owner Beth Scanlon. During our visit, Beth walked students through how the company operates and manages projects from planning through completion. Students toured the facility, learned about the equipment that makes the work possible and even had the chance to climb aboard an excavator.

Beth also shared the story of the family business, which began when Chris Scanlon founded Scanlon Trucking in 2000. After Chris and Beth married, they combined his passion for trucks with Beth’s experience in heavy equipment and construction to launch Scanlon Excavating and Concrete in 2010. Today, they work side by side, serving municipalities and commercial clients throughout the area.

This year’s visit was especially meaningful because our CEO student Audrey is the daughter of Beth and Chris. We’ve been fortunate to visit Scanlon Excavating for several years, but having a member of the Scanlon family in this year’s CEO class made the experience even more special.

The learning didn’t stop with excavation and entrepreneurship. Beth also talked with students about personal finance and the importance of investing early, including how a Roth IRA can help them build wealth over time.

That’s one of the things we value most about CEO business visits. Students may walk in expecting to learn about one industry and leave with lessons in entrepreneurship, operations, careers, personal finance and life.
